If photography is your business, the expense of Creative Cloud is worth the upgrade just so you don’t have to rely on workarounds to keep your software running, or add an extra conversion step before being able to access your photos. ![]() If CS6 and your current operating system are working, and you don’t need to upgrade, why tempt fate?Īll of this said, if you’re still running CS6 out of a refusal to buy into the Cloud, you’re missing out on a lot of features that have been added since 2012, especially if you’re a 360 content creator or running a newer camera. I need it working more than I need the latest macOS, and so my last piece of advice is the timeless “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” mantra. It’s a version behind on software, running macOS Sierra. My laptop is my main workhorse machine for my business. If your plugins aren’t working, check if there’s an upgrade available. While there are some workarounds to keep it going, it sometimes pays to pay, and the one-time charge ($69) for the new version gets you service and support and more compatibility than the neglected old free version (now called Nik Collection 2012) from when Google owned the software. I’m a heavy user of the Nik Collection, but found that in High Sierra that it was constantly crashing. I found that Adobe’s automatic updates on CS6 weren’t working in the move to macOS High Sierra, and so I had to download Camera Raw 9.1.1 manually to get it working. This does add an extra step in the process to opening your photos, but that’s the price of hanging on to older software. You can drop your camera’s raw files into the DNG converter and convert them into the digital negative standard, which is still able to be read by Photoshop CS6. That’s where Adobe’s DNG converter comes in. That means many newer cameras, such as Canon’s 80D or 5D Mark IV, aren’t supported and you won’t be able to natively open raw files from newer cameras in the older version of Photoshop. Make Use of Adobe’s DNG ConverterĪdobe stopped updating Camera Raw for CS6 three years ago, at version 9.1.1. Education pricing is up to 75 off for the CS6 Student & Teacher Editions. Euro pricing shown is for International English version. That means my third computer, one of the desktops, soldiers on with my previously paid-for version of Photoshop CS6, as it doesn’t make sense to pay for another full license on an occasionally used machine.Īs software grows stale though, it gets harder to run on newer machines and software, and so if you’ve got a shiny new Mac but no reason to upgrade to CC, here’s how you can eke a little more life out of your current version of Photoshop. CS6 Upgrade versions are only available direct from Adobe. ![]() I’m a Creative Cloud subscriber, but that unfortunately only lets me install the software on two computers. I’m in a different position in that I split my time in two places with two desktop computers and one laptop that all have photo needs. Some don’t need to upgrade, others can’t afford the monthly fee, and still others refuse to buy into the software as a service model. Though Adobe Photoshop CS6 came out more than six years ago, there are a good many people still using it in 2018. ![]() The real joy of this game is the fact that you can dip into it for 30 minutes or so of gore-soaked fun if you’ve had a tough day, it could be quite a cathartic experience. Including the dungeon-crawling mode Beneath does damage Paint the Town Red‘s sense of identity a little, but it’s certainly not a deal breaker. Speaking of extras, I’d pay good money for a split-screen mode sharing Paint the Town Red‘s ludicrous mayhem would really be something else. On top of that, if you’re playing on Steam you can download extra user-made levels – though console players are mostly out of luck on that front (any added levels would have to be curated by the developers). Wander around before you throw a punch and you’ll see all these little tableaus taking place, which will leave you itching to disrupt them. There’s the easy-to-miss gnomes who charge through the dungeon, challenging you to catch them before they disappear into the portal. There’s the way the soundtrack takes things up a notch but, if you happen to punch the DJ, band or so forth, the music disappears only to return a little later. In fact, that’s Paint the Town Red in a nutshell it’s got so many other great touches, some there to challenge you, some just to entertain. ![]() You can’t exit each dungeon level until you’ve earned a specific amount of gold so you’re left wondering whether to buy a ghoul-decapitating sword or hold onto your hard-earned cash. You get to choose your class, purchase weapons and, although permadeath is a fixture, if you play it enough you’ll earn permanent upgrades. It’s not initially as difficult as surviving Paint the Town Red‘s pub fights, but it escalates very quickly. The Arena mode, which pitches you against waves of foes, has a learning curve start a fight in Paint the Town Red’s regular mode and you’ll get a challenge every time.Īnd I haven’t even covered the roguelike mode, dubbed ‘Beneath’. Unless you expressly set enemies to be weak, however, you’re going to have to fight for your life, no matter what mode you’re in. Enemies only move when you move which turns each level into a hyper-violent chess variant. There’s even an option to turn on SuperHot mode, which apes the game in question, complete with white and red aesthetic. Want everyone in a location to want you dead? Turn on the zombie modifier and you’re good to go. ![]() Three attacks might not sound like much but they’re enough, but if you really want guns you can select the “gun show” modifier. However, all of that is just the vanilla game you can then apply modifiers to warp Paint the Town Red to your heart content. The levels aren’t enormous but there’s a little room to explore and, if you’re not careful, get penned into a room but, as the person who started the punch-up, you’ve only got yourself to blame. That, in itself, is a good enough reason to keep moving. The twisted genius of this is that you can be so distracted by the chaos that you won’t notice the two angry patrons coming up the stairs behind you. ![]() When the fight breaks out, it’s everyone for themselves you’ll have a few people coming after you but you’ll also witness other people pummelling each other, grabbing weapons off the floor and so on. Secondly, you’re not the only person getting punched. If Paint the Town Red looked in any way realistic it’d be absolutely horrific but the game gets away with it due to its aforementioned Minecraft-style graphics. Thanks to the voxel-based graphics, you can literally smack someone’s face right off, revealing their skull beneath. Firstly, they’re so amazingly chaotic you can punch, you can kick, you can fling anything you can get your hands on. There are two things in particular that make these brawls stand out. Then you throw a chair, or fire a cannon and it all kicks off maybe I should feel more guilty about that than getting two games for one. You’ll wander into a blocky Minecraft style location – a biker bar, a disco, a prison, a pirate cove – and everyone’s just enjoying themselves. Ultimately we decided that for our first game as a new company, we'd be better off going for the publicity and attention Hydro Thunder would bring to the game. Ralf and I both loved Hydro Thunder, but we also thought Barracuda had great potential as an original concept. But the more we all talked about it, the more it started to make sense. At first we were like, yeah right, that'll happen. While we were hammering out the details of the publishing agreement, there was this one producer at MGS who kept talking about how with a few tweaks Barracuda would make an awesome Hydro Thunder sequel. I won't go into all the why's and wherefore's, but let's just say we liked Microsoft's style, and the deal ended up happening with them. Eventually - thankfully - three publishers were interested, and one of those was Microsoft Game Studios. We took it up and down the West Coast publishing gauntlet, showing it to every publisher who'd give us the time of day. In July 2007 we started shopping Barracuda around. (If you've played Hydro Thunder Hurricane, you might recognize the beginnings of the Tsunami Bowl in the background.) Here's a slightly-touched-up screenshot from the finished pitch. Which is pretty awesome for a couple of guys working out of a garage, if you ask me. So after 6 months of work we had a playable prototype. You could also custom-build your boats from different parts that would affect how the boat performed. Gameplay was built around catching air off big wave sets and pitching your boat forwards and backwards to land perfectly on the next wave, or dip under it to shoot out the other side. The basic idea was speedboats meets Supercross in a futuristic post-global-warming flooded Earth. The game we set out to make was code-named Barracuda. Plus with our experience on Blood Wake, we knew boat gameplay was something we could make happen. Ralf and I are firm believers in the emergent awesomeness of water-based gameplay, and aside from minigames in titles like WiiSports there hadn't been a decent water racing game in about 10 years. The first thing we did with the game was to throw our original concept out the window, with the irrefutable logic that we actually wanted to make a game that more than a few dozen people would want to play. Worst case scenario, we'd spend 6 months working on something we loved, and if it didn't happen we figured we could give it up and go back to working for the Man.īy January 2008 we'd quit our jobs, liquidated every personal asset we could live without, upgraded our PCs, and incorporated a new company - Vector Unit. We gave ourselves 6 months to make a prototype. We'd both saved up a little money, and we figured it would be worth the gamble. How will you pay your mortgage? Where you will you get health insurance? And - worst of all - what if you spend months developing your idea and nobody wants it? Most people don't do it, because, let's face it, it's scary as hell. "So I've been having these thoughts.about quitting and doing the small games thing." Enter BarracudaĮvery developer I know daydreams about taking the plunge: quitting your job and working on your own game. And in the middle of this chat, all of a sudden Ralf comes up with this doozy: Then late one night in May of 2007 we were online chatting about the idea and how it wasn't happening. ![]() We kept talking about it, but it kept not happening. Well, it never happened - turns out its pretty hard to make a game on the side when you have a regular job to work at, and a house to take care of, and friends and family to spend time with. We figured we'd bust out a quick network-enabled Blood Ball tribute, stick it up on the Internets and see what happened. We'd always been bummed that Blood Wake 2 never happened, in particular because the design spec called for networked multiplayer and it would have been twelve kinds of awesome. We were both feeling itchy in our jobs, and we came up with the idea of starting a little side project, something to work on in the evenings. Years later, in 2007, Ralf was still at Stormfront and I was at EA. Blood Wake had its pluses and minuses, but the feature in the game that everybody on the team loved best was also the one feature that was almost completely hidden as an Easter Egg - a multiplayer boat soccer game called Blood Ball. My friend Ralf Knoesel and I met at Stormfront Studios, where among other things we worked together on a boat combat game for the first Xbox called Blood Wake. But now that the Tempest Pack DLC is out of our hands and flying (I hope, flying) through Microsoft Certification, I thought it might be interesting to take a more in-depth look at how this whole thing started. We often get the question from interviewers: "How did a small company like Vector Unit end up with the Hydro Thunder license?" In close-quarters battle, you'll be able to request and assist with breach-and-clear sections, and "choices you make will determine who on your team will die. The companion interactivity, meanwhile, means that you'll be able to decide whether you go in guns-blazing, or sneak through. ![]() The last one would represent the return of one of the series' most recognizable villains and hints that the game will reimagine key moments from Infinity Ward's 2009 sequel.
